How to get more more happy hormones

Writer's picture: Lucy Lucy

My friends, family and “walking” clients are well aware of my need to walk a lot! For me it is complete down time, time to talk and put the world to rights if with friends, enjoy the scenery whether in the mountains, town or by the sea and empty my brain if by myself. If I miss out on my daily walk or walks, I get quite grouchy (or salty as my children would say!). Whatever the weather or circumstances I always make it a priority to take time out to move my body and reap the benefits which in turn keeps me grounded, hormones happier and for the majority of the time ensures a good nights sleep.

A brisk walk everyday will:

Help stabilise blood sugar levels - keeping your brain healthy, energy levels stable and prevent the onset of pre diabetes and diabetes.

Lift your mood by releasing dopamine which takes the edge of stress and makes you feel happier.

Boost serotonin levels which aids sleep, regulates appetite, aids digestion and improves memory

Increase/maintain bone mass - walking is weight bearing so a must for the fight again osteoporosis

Help alleviate and prevent back pain, by building endurance in the large muscle groups that stabilise and support the spine.

Help raise oestrogen levels - Getting your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day will give your levels a boost, which helps keep menopause symptoms to a minimum.

Whether you walk in the countryside, by the sea or in a town, enjoy being out in the fresh air.

Consistency is the key to all lifestyle habits. If a daily walk is too much to commit to and you need help to get motivated and started on a plan, let me know. I am here to help!
