A controversial subject I am sure, but one in which I feel very strongly about. Davina McCall and Dr Louise Newsome have done wonders for bringing Menopause and its debilitating symptoms to the world's attention, but we have yet to see anyone giving our poor husbands, brothers, fathers, uncles, and male friends the time of day when it comes to sleep, stress, self-esteem and unhealthy habits.
As someone once said, if men suffered from the menopause, they would have found a cure years ago!
Joking aside, it upsets me so much seeing men at breaking point, yet digging deep in order to keep working, keep smiling, ignoring or being sympathetic to their wifes/partners increasingly erratic needs and super dad to bolshy kids and teens. For many, the barriers go down and they become to outsiders the grumpy, moody, unapproachable man in the office, boat, home and school gates.
We women are on the whole an emotional bunch, we are blessed with the ability to laugh, cry, scream, shout and not be judged. Men, however, bottle their feelings up, the knock on affect is like everyone, male or female, high stress, anxiety, exhaustion, overwhelm and difficulty sleeping. Consequently the weight goes on, they are not happy and resigned that this is how life is going to be from now on.
I have an annoying habit of quietly observing people (or inspecting them as my family would say) and having spent much of my life in a male dominated environment, have noticed the quiet signs that all is not well. Many suffer from sleep issues due to spending nights worrying about finances and how to keep juggling so many balls at a time.
Many are aware that they are grumpy, short tempered and not giving their families their best, Its hard, mid life households with raging hormones can be a minefield and trying to keep the peace exhausting. Reaching for a bag of crisps and a beer as soon as they come in from work is a way of saying I am exhausted, stressed and don't say a word, "I deserve this"!
Stress and overwhelm take their toll. Ageing parents, quite often not close by or even in the same country, adds to the long list of worries. It's easy to lose sight of who you are and your goals.
Lack of time, energy and motivation can result self-esteem being at an all time low, how ever much everyone jokes about "dad bods", it strikes a chord. A weekly run doesn't help and just makes you feel worse.
As a result I have noticed that many men of a certain age feel lost, empty, unloved and not really sure of where and how to start turning their life around and what the future holds.
If you mention health coaching to a man they run for the hills, it is way to "out there" for them and they certainly don't have time for more appointments and actions in their lives.
BUT, You really can sleep like a baby and wake up feeling full of energy and ready to face whatever life has to throw at you. How great would you feel if you could get your body back to a healthy weight, supple, toned and feel confident in it? Regular exercise is a form of self care, I can help you find the time to fit some form of movement into daily life and enjoy it, without feeling guilty or overwhelmed.
Eating and drinking is a pleasure and something to be enjoyed with family and friends, but wouldn't it be good to be able to reduce your sugar consumption, understand how food choices affect your sleep, mood and stress and be able to make healthy choices without living off lettuce leaves and quinoa? Your body will thank you too, it is so important to take some time out for a reset before that "dad bod" becomes unmanageable and the doctor starts telling you that you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are borderline pre diabetes not to mention your BMI being off the scale.
How good would it be to have a calm and happy household, to be able to enjoy time out with family and friends and no stress? Wouldn't you love to be in a position to make realistic plans for the future and achieve those goals leaving you feeling more confident, happy and in control of life?
